The Pale Blue Dot: The picture of Earth from 4 billion miles away. As told by Carl Sagan through some my favorite films set to the music of Mogwai.

    Well said. Great thing is, since responding to all the comments on this post I just can’t help watching as many Sagan clips as possible ;)
    America – and the world – needs a person like Carl now more than ever. Don’t get me wrong, I think every astrophysicist is worth listening to (Tyson’s awesome), but Sagan so eloquently fused philosophy and astronomy that even the thickest of skulls in that era respected Carl and his views. Makes me very sad indeed that he’s gone.

    I know what you …
    I know what you mean. The video and music aren’t required and can give a meaning distorted from that which was intended.

    However, in today’s society many people are so immersed in the media culture, they find it hard to think without some auditory/visual accompaniment. There’s never quiet reflection. So to assist them in thinking about these things, it has to be presented in a way that they are comfortable with.

    I’d say there are many many worse ways to present Sagan’s words than this.

    @xOsKaHH OK – since …
    @xOsKaHH OK – since you asked…the movies and the music illustrate a very small slice of human history, therefore going against what Sagan was speaking of in his profound speech – I simply point out that his speech alone needs nothing else – no music – Mugwai or Bach, Brittany or Beethoven – or pictures other than the pale blue dot itself, is needed…in other words: Res ipsa loquitur.
    No disrespect for any of the clips or the music – just not my cup of tea, so please don’t feel sorry for me:)
