do you know a picture book about depression?

Posted by admin on March 4th, 2010 and filed under picture book | 2 Comments »

i need to write a picture book about depression for an english assignment and i’d like a few ideas.
i don’t really need ideas on how to set it out. i more need to read one.

I have a book called The Blue Day Book that is essentially photos of cute animals and a sentence or two to go with each picture. It’s supposed to be motivational and make you feel better…it’s not totally about depression, but it made me smile through a couple sad years.

Check it out, it might give you some ideas.

Need help thinking of a good theme for a children’s picture book?

Hi
I have this assignment at school at the moment for my children’s literature class and we have to create and produce our own children’s picture book of around 25 – 30 pages. I am stuck for good ideas and would appreciate any constructive ideas very much.

Thank you all!

Heres a way on how to brainstorm them;

Steps

Think of a particular child you know.
Think of that child’s problem behaviors. Choose one.
Consider possible short-term negative outcomes resulting from the problem behavior.
In other words, think of something unpleasant that you can imagine happening because of the behavior – but nothing too traumatic. For instance, if the child insists on sleeping in his parents’ bed, maybe you imagine his friends no longer coming over because they feel he acts too babyish.
Now work backwards from the imagined outcome. For instance:

Your son’s friend stops coming over. Why?
Because your son no longer has his own room. Why?
Because Dad turned it into an office. Why?
Because bedrooms are for sleeping and your son is no longer sleeping in his!
Take the story arc you’ve just defined, add a beginning (start with a happy child unconcerned with the problem behavior), and an ending (in which the child chooses, as a result of the negative outcome, to self-correct the behavior), and you should have a complete story ready for writing!

Tips

If this was a project for home use, you can
1) illustrate the book yourself or 2) let your child illustrate so it’s a something you’ve created together. Put just enough text on each page to describe one colorful scene.
Additionally, since the book refers to an actual problem behavior, you might be able to use it as bibliotherapy for your child.

Or you can always have a hero story, or something with a revalation.

Like a monkey with super-powers that saves the day. NOT A GOOD IDEA.

How do you make a picture book, assignment?

This is for my year 8 assignment.

Well i have to make a picture book, and i don’t know where to start. Its meant for young children, i have to use short sentences and simpler vocabulary as well as lots of pictures so they can understand the story.
And its based on a chapter of a book, which is a short novel story. Please help me, tips? anything will help.
i dont know where to start..
ty.

Start with the story. Make your story simpler by using easier words, short sentences and graphic images. Some help can be reading Narnia books to see what kind of language to be used. They are perfect children books.
After that collect all the pictures you get and put them in appropriate places.

What are the steps to creating a children’s picture book?

Posted by admin on February 26th, 2010 and filed under picture book | 2 Comments »

For Language Arts I have to write a persuasive picture book. My audience would most likely be preschoolers to about kindergartners, so I decided to do one about cleaning your room or something else that would be very important for young children to learn. What are some of the steps to make it easier for me to write?

Also, what are some other topics I could use? Thanks for your help!
Meg

How do i layout a picture book on microsoft word?

I need to make a picture book for a school project, and i was wondering if there is a feature in microsoft office word that will automatically let me format the document to be like a picture book. can it be done, and if so, how do you do it?
thanks so much in advance =]

Sounds like what you need is a document template (basically a document with all the formating and styles, but none of the content). You can go to the Microsoft web site, they have down loadable templates there. You can also do a general internet search using G..gle or Yahoo.

Can you think of a catchy title for a children’s picture book about the four seasons?

Posted by admin on February 22nd, 2010 and filed under picture book | 6 Comments »

I just finished writing my first children’s book. It is a rhyming book about the four seasons. It is a picture book, which means it is meant to be read to a child by a parent or other adult. I am stumped on a good title. Any ideas?

How about ‘Red Leaves and Green Leaves’ if it includes things about nature?

Or ‘Green Trees and Autumn Leaves’ (or likewise ‘Green Leaves and Autumn Trees’)…that rhymes a bit?

Or or maybe ‘The 4 Big Changes’ or ‘Where Did My Snowman Go?’ if its a bit educational…

um…or maybe "The Reasons the Seasons Are So" (that rhymes)…

hmm idk, i hope those helped!

In search of a childhood book–Choose your own adventure style picture book with a monkey?

I am trying to find a book I loved as a child. I have no idea what the title is, but it was a full-color picture book in the style of a "Choose your own adventure." However, I am quite sure it was made by a different company. It featured a monkey and each page had different paths you could choose from, and based on your choice you would turn to one page or another. There were cannibals, quicksand and other terrible obstacles along the way. Surely there is someone else out there who knows the book and can tell me more?
it had very little in the way of written plot. it was mainly visual. The only characters were the reader and the monkey companion, I believe.
Thanks so much II2! Thanks to you I found the book! It is "Jungle of Peril" in the Choose-Your-Challenge series! You just made my year!

It is "The Fairground of Dread" by Patrick Burston? I don’t know the details of the obstacles, but it features a monkey. "While trying to keep Professor Killjoy from releasing his dreaded antilaughing gas, the reader chooses from a variety of paths through an abandoned fairground and thereby controls the course of the story."

You can see the cover here. Maybe it will ring a bell. http://www.amazon.com/Fairground-Dread-Choose-Your-Challenge-Gamebook/dp/0763601373/?tag=24680e-20

How to become a picture book illustrator/ designer etc?

Posted by admin on February 16th, 2010 and filed under picture book | 2 Comments »

I want to become a picture book illustrator/painter/designer for flower pots etc as a second/1st job if I don’t like Real Estate.. what do I have to do if I don’t want more than 3 years of college?

I would suggest thinking long and hard about what it is you want to devote your life to…art or real estate. The two are so opposite that if you try to do both you will end up half-assing one or the other. If your choice is art, invest the time in a proper education. This is a tough industry to break into, you will need good credentials to be taken seriously.

do you know any children picture book with scary illustrations?

Posted by admin on February 14th, 2010 and filed under picture book | 2 Comments »

My friend’s 3-year-old became obsessed with “scary” children stories. His current favorite books are “The Three little pigs,” and similar ones. So I’m searching for children books with scary illustrations that have realistic or even unhappy endings for such curious kids. However, most of those books I found (three little pigs, seven goats, peter and the wolf, chicken little…) have happy endings and no scary illustrations. Do you know such a picture book?

The Headless Horseman.

All of The Brothers Grimm stories..

The Lost Children:This French fairy tale starts out just like Hansel & Gretel. A brother and sister get lost in the woods and find themselves trapped in cages, getting plumped up to be eaten. Only it’s not a wicked witch, it’s the Devil and his wife. The Devil makes a sawhorse for the little boy to bleed to death on (seriously!) and then goes for a walk, telling the girl to get her brother situated on the sawhorse before he returned. The siblings pretend to be confused and ask the Devil’s wife to demonstrate how the boy should lay on the sawhorse; when she shows them they tie her to it and slit her throat. They steal all of the Devil’s money and escape in his carriage. He chases after them once he discovers what they’ve done, but he dies in the process. Yikes.

The king who wished to marry his daughter:The King’s wife dies and he swears he will never marry again unless he finds a woman who fits perfectly into his dead Queen’s clothes. Guess what? His daughter does! So he insists on marrying her. Ew. Understandably, she has a problem with this and tries to figure out how to avoid wedding dear old dad. She says she won’t marry him until she gets a trunk that locks from outside and inside and can travel over land and sea. He gets it, but she says she has to make sure the chest works. To prove it, he locks her inside and floats her in the sea. Her plan works: she just keeps floating until she reaches another shore. So she escapes marrying her dad, but ends up working as a scullery maid in another land… from here you can follow the Cinderella story. She meets a prince, leaves her shoe behind, he goes around trying to see who it belongs to. The End.

The Juniper Tree:Cannibalism, murder, decapitation… freakiness abounds left and right in this weird Grimm story. A widower gets remarried, but the second wife loathes the son he had with his first wife because she wants her daughter to inherit the family riches. So she offers the little boy an apple from inside a chest. When he leans over to get it, she slams the lid down on him and chops his head off. Note: if you’re trying to convince your child to eat more fruits and veggies, do not tell them this story. Well, the woman doesn’t want anyone to know that she killed the boy, so she puts his head back on and wraps a handkerchief around his neck to hide the fact that it’s no longer attached. Her daughter ends up knocking his head off and getting blamed for his death. To hide what happened, they chop up the body and make him into pudding, which they feed to his poor father. Eventually the boy is reincarnated as a bird and he drops a stone on his stepmother’s head, which kills her and brings him back to life.
